Hiu Lai Chong
3-Day Plein Air Workshop with Hiu Lai Chong:

“My Approach to Painting:”

There are many ways to approach painting in the open air. What you choose to paint and how you paint involves many challenging decisions to make within a limited working time frame. In this three day workshop, Hiu Lai will demonstrate her approach to painting, from the initial thought process through the painting’s development.
There will be a short lecture and demo each morning followed by painting on location. She will discuss tips and techniques for design, composition, edges, color, shape and values, and how she uses visual elements to communicate ideas and feeling in the work. The class will also explore a nocturne session if weather permits. She will discuss her tools and tips for painting at night, what to avoid and what can help during the process.

Tuition: $375 plus tax

Charlie Hunter
Composition in Plein Air with Charlie Hunter

Charlie Hunter's distinctive plein air work turns heads and raises questions. Why water-mixable oils? Is it true that a squeegee is involved? We'll take a look at some great paintings of the masters; we will go over some simple, yet invaluable tools for accurate rendering, and Charlie will expound and instruct about how and why he uses water-mixable oils. We'll learn and laugh a lot during outdoor painting and indoor critique sessions each day while staying true to the credo of have big fun; make big mess.

*Tuition can be pro-rated for students signing up after the course start day

We will be taking Portrait drawing to another level, exploring using different mediums. Students will benefit from the same level of instruction in our regular portrait drawing class..learning about proportions and anatomy of the human head, methods for simplifying the planes of the head, shape identification, design, and understanding of depicting lighting of form…all of which contribute to a better understanding of how to see and draw portraits more accurately and more efficiently. All are also excellent exercises for learning how to draw anything.

We will be exploring working with terra cotta on colored paper, graphite washes with pencil, and with watercolors. We will be working from photographs for this class.

Students will be asked to bring in at least one photograph for the last classes to create a portrait of a friend or family member.

FOUNDATION DRAWING WITH COLORED PASTEL
Ages 8 - 15
Mondays 5:00 - 6:30
Jan. 25 - March 21st
*Note: no class Feb 15
*Tuition can be pro-rated for students signing up after the course start day

Tuition: $300
*Supplies included except for colored paper pad. Description of pad of paper will be sent to students.

A RoseArt Atelier “Foundation Drawing”, class is an essential class in our program that must be taken at least one time by our students and is most beneficial if taken many times. It also is a good choice for the first class to “begin” with if you are new to the studio. An artist of any ability can always benefit from going back to basics and our foundation classes introduce plenty of advanced and valuable concepts.

In this foundation class with a emphasis on using the medium of “Pastel” students learn what is taught in all of my foundation classes: How to see, how to simplify form, how to separate light from shadow and how to design and make decisions about their drawing on the fly.  All of these foundation principles are the essential building blocks for all representational drawing and painting and bring great value to visual artists. And these concepts apply to painting as much as drawing. In additional we will be working with COLOR as we are using Pastels rather than pencil. We will be starting out with value and will move into color as the concepts are applied and practiced.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING
Friday mornings 9:00 - noon  1 spot available
Jan. 22 - March 25th
*note: No class 2/19 and 3/19

*Tuition can be pro-rated for students signing up after the course start day

This class will be taught partially in the studio and partially outdoors. (weather permitting with this winter of El Niño). As in all of my landscape classes…we will be working with color theory. Much emphasis will be on color harmonies, value, and how to control color to show form and light. Other areas of “art enlightment”, that will be taught are: brushwork, design, palette use, and lastly…finding ones voice artistically. There will also be some study of master painters with exercises to better understand how these painters utilize design and painting principles.

Materials list will be provided.

We will be working on larger scale studio paintings. (sizes 12" x 16" and up). Students will be working on subject matter of their own choice for this Studio class. Subjects can range from landscape and seascape, people, animals, architecture, floral or still life. Students will learn how to conceptualize a larger format painting for their independent study, how to best come up with a design and layout for their painting by creating preliminary sketches and color schemes that I will review with each student. We will also review how to best take photos for reference material and how to choose wisely from photo references they already have/own. All work will be based on original ideas and thus could also be a good choices for inclusion in portfolios for those students who are applying for an art related major or to a Art College.

"Spring In" Plein Air Tuesdays
Kristen Olson

8 Tuesdays "en plein air" beginning February 2nd, 2016 in the Bay Area with Kristen Olson

Join me this spring for session 1 and learn how to paint a wide variety of landscapes.  Throughout the classes,  I will teach you painting techniques and how to "see as an artist".

You will gain confidence as you learn how to approach a wide variety of landscapes such as farms, gardens, beaches, sea cliffs, architecture and reflections so that you can go out and paint whatever your heart desires.

This is a plein air workshop so we will be painting outside at a different location each Tuesday.
The class includes both painting demonstrations as well as individual instruction which will be personalized to the level of each artist.  Class size will be kept small to ensure that each student gets a lot of individual help at their easel.

Plein air painting is a great way to experience the outdoors and express your love for the landscape.  I find that the practice of painting outdoors on a regular basis breathes life into your studio work and creates a space for you to think more creatively about what to paint.  It lets you "experience your world through paint".

We will meet at various locations around San Jose, if you need accommodations, let me know.  Sometimes we travel to locations that are difficult to get around.
The locations schedule for all classes will be emailed to registered students in January.
This class is open to all levels of artists including beginners and to all mediums, demonstrations will be primarily in oil.

The cost is $320.00 for all classes, you can register for this class with a $100.00 deposit, to register, visit the workshops page at
