June Coastal Workshop with Kristen Olson

Join Kristen in beautiful Southern California and take a beach break for 1, 2 or all 3 days while you learn to paint California sea cliffs, wet sand reflections and foliage.

We will paint the scenic southern California coastline, with sea rocks and turquoise water at Reef Point, Crystal Cove,  Little Corona Del Mar Beach and Laguna Beach.

Throughout the workshop I will tailor each location to a different lesson that includes work on the fundamentals of painting such as composition, value, color, edges and how to add that special quality you love about your chosen location by showing you how to add the emotions you feel for your subject to your painting.

Each morning I'll begin with a painting demonstration and lecture.  We'll have a short lunch break and then you will paint for the rest of the afternoon with my help.

The workshop hours will be from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm.  It is open to all levels of painters and to oil, watercolor, acrylic and gouache.
The exact class meeting locations will be emailed upon registration.

“Expression & Response”

Lori Putnam’s paintings are a personal and genuine response to a scene, and she encourages her students to learn to do the same. Lori believes that each artist sees differently and should leave their distinctive mark on the canvas. However, letting go of formulas and finding the confidence to honestly express ourselves can seem daunting or difficult. Students will leave this workshop excited, ready to experiment more on their own, and above all, pointed towards meaningful, personal artistic growth. The workshop will include lectures and demonstrations, individual painting time, personalized instruction, and group critiques to promote your progress and take you to the next level of creating poetry in your paintings. This class is appropriate for advanced beginners, and intermediate and advanced painters. Previous plein air experience is highly recommended.

Lori Putnam’s approachable, giving nature, energetic demonstrations, and hands-on teaching style have made her one of the most sought-after artist workshop instructors and her workshops often fill-up rapidly. “Expression & Response” is the only workshop she will be teaching on the West Coast in 2015.

Charlie Hunter

Early Autumn Plein Air Workshop in Bellows Falls, VT

Charlie Hunter invites you to Vermont for an early-autumn painting adventure. Once a thriving industrial and transportation hub, Bellows Falls today boasts crumbling paper mills, vernacular outbuildings, railroad architecture and an extraordinary town square. Late September is a time of  surpassing loveliness in Vermont - the days are warm and golden, the nights cool and crisp (unless, of course, it is rainy and horrid).

There will be plenty of time for painting, daily discussions and critique, as well as multiple Hunter demos for those curious to witness the full act of plein-air murkiness and the use of water-mixable oils, window squeegees, cheap brushes, toothpicks and cotton swabs to achieve a distinct lack of clarity. Hunter is a member of Richard Schmid's Putney Painters, and his work is featured in the expanded ALLA PRIMA II.
